Fish of 1000 casts? What about on the fly? Musky may be the toughest freshwater fish to catch on a fly rod. Patience, attention to detail and the drive to get the king of freshwater in the net. Many amazing days this summer chasing muskies on fly… love each one! Rods keep getting better, flies bigger but the dream remains the same.
The cold nights have the Ottawa River walleye moving in a bit shallower and they have been very active. Crank baits, worm harnesses and jigging is getting the job done. If you are a fan of walleye angling there are still some nice days in the forecast.
The time musky enthusiasts dream of is here! The first day of autumn is a time to think of speed and how quickly you are bringing in your baits. The cold nights are dropping water temperatures daily and as the temps get colder, it is important to slow down your presentation.
Muskies will not chase as much as they do in the warmer months but the females are putting on the feed bag for the spring spawn. This also means that it is time to break out the biggest offerings in your tackle box. Large rubber baits, 14+” flies and dive and raise jerk baits are some of my favorite offerings for fall musky. Slow down and supersize and you may net the fish of a lifetime!
